Hoyt Hughes, wounded, and both escapees dead at the scene. To get a conception of how deceptive the ambush proved to be, one only has to look for the pickup, which is barely discernible in center of photo, near the house.

TROOPER PAUL JOHNSTON POINTS TO A CACHE OF WEAPONS found in or near the stolen pickup truck used by the escapees in their final bid for freedom. The arsenal included several rifles, shotguns and pistols. Note bullet holes in pickup back of Johnston.
