Store Operator Murdered, Woman Believed Kidnapped

Bryan and Grayson county officers today searched wooded areas above and below Denison dam for a woman feared a kidnap victim - part of an armed robbery in which a store operator was murdered.

The body of Bobby Spencer, 29, his face blasted away with a shotgun, was discovered late last night at the Rogers Sport Center, a mile south of the dam on SH 75A.

We have no choice but to believe that Loretta F. Spencer is the victim of a kidnapping by an armed robber," said Grayson county sheriff Jack Driskell, who was directing the two-state search.

There apparently were no witnesses to the killing. The body was discovered at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday by Grayson deputy Dusty Hunt and reserve deputy Bill Campbell.

Driskell said about $100 was missing from a cash register at the store, a sales outlet for fishing gear and camping supplies. He said a "large amount" of money in another register was overlooked.

The sheriff said officers have reason to believe the robber left the business headed north, toward the dam and Oklahoma. Three Bryan county deputies, a district attorney's investigator and several volunteers were working the north side of both Red river and Lake Texoma, using Civil Defense four wheel drive vehicles.

Driskell described the missing woman as five feet, four inches tall, weighing 113 pounds. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. When last seen she was wearing a blue blouse, white slacks and brown wedge shoes.

Driskell appealed to anyone who has seen a woman answering the description to call his office collect in Sherman, (214) 893-4388.
